Trip Overview

The Upper Mustang Trek is one of Nepal’s most extraordinary and culturally significant trekking adventures, offering travelers the opportunity to explore the hidden kingdom of Mustang, a remote trans-Himalayan region bordering Tibet. Often referred to as the “Last Forbidden Kingdom,” Upper Mustang remained closed to foreign visitors until 1992, allowing its ancient Tibetan culture, traditions, monasteries, and lifestyle to remain remarkably preserved.

Located in the rain shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, Upper Mustang features a unique desert-like landscape characterized by colorful cliffs, deep canyons, barren hills, ancient caves, and medieval villages. Unlike many other trekking regions in Nepal, Upper Mustang receives very little rainfall, making it an excellent destination even during the monsoon season.

The trek follows historic trade routes that once connected Nepal and Tibet and leads trekkers to the ancient walled city of Lo Manthang, the former capital of the Kingdom of Mustang. Along the route, visitors experience centuries-old monasteries, traditional mud-brick houses, prayer walls, chortens, and authentic Tibetan Buddhist culture.

Upper Mustang offers a remarkable combination of history, culture, dramatic landscapes, and Himalayan scenery, making it one of Nepal’s most unique trekking destinations.
